Homework, October 19 (due October 22): Passive Modals

Think about a problem that exists in your country. In your opinion, what should be done to correct it? What shouldn't be done? What could or could not be done? What must or must not be done? Try to use a variety of passive modals when describing the solutions to your problem.

  3. Problem :“ The Venezuelan government closed an important T.V channel two year ago. Right now Hugo chavez is installing own satellite. This does not have public access and you must subscribe to read the news. The real problem is that the government will not publish the real news of the day to day in comparation to TV channels private. ”

    In my opinion :

    Venezuelan peoples must be consulted.
Venezuelan peoples should be prepared to protest Venezuelan government.
Channels private had better be respected .
The satellite is going to be completed in five monts.
Hugo Chavez must be substituted of the presidency.
The satellite can’t be used by only government.
The Freedom of expression had better be respected.
Channels private could be published the real news.
Channels of government could not be seen the real news.

  4. As we all know, China has a huge proportion of population. And about 30% are graduate students. But every year, few employments are given by government and companies. Due to this, a good job cann't be found by most graduate students. How to solve this problem?
First, the population increase must be controlled by the gavernment. Right now, birth plan is carried out by Chinese government. And also, the graduation rate must be controlled by the gavernment.
Second, employments must be afforded the government and companiesmore for graduate students.

  6. There are many people in Saudi Arabia are struggling to get their owned houses specially in the large cities , only too expensive rents for apartments medium-sized or millions of riyals to buy a small house are available . The rents has increased that it equal to the rents in the US at some cities !! . It is expected that the housing crisis in a competition with the unemployment crisis and poverty.

By looking to a normal employee who did not get promotion that deserves for years, which represents the most segment of our society , we can realize the main problem . The employees are facing the family requirements , health expenses , education issues and the problem to own house .I wonder how can this employee handle all these expenses most of his life beside the the waiting of the retirement allowance to buy house or even to try that .

    Suggested solutions ,

1-Mortgage loans should be provided by banks with an moderate interest rate compared to the employee salary.

2-Taxes should be imposed on real estate companies , without affecting on the final profits of selling (Medium profits ).

3- The laws to limit the monopoly supposed to be developed , ( ownership of a lot lands and properties) . that prevent other people from own their property .

4-Some laws should be developed to stable the rents for a certain period, like years maybe !

  7. Dalia,
Nice work. You sound like a future policy maker.

#3. "supposed to be" is not correct. Should or must are good. "Supposed to be" means that its the law (or something like that) and its not being upheld.

  8. In Korea, most women, in the past, usually were housewives. However, nowadays, women also have a job because a lot of money is needed to make a living, but they still can't free themselves from household works. Most people think that houseworks and cares for children should be done by women. Besides, they think that even if a wife isn't respected by her husband, a husband should be respected by his wife. Hence, most men, especially more than middle aged men, still doesn't do houseworks. Now, biased thoughts about a woman should be abandoned very soon, and women should be liberated from discrimination.

  11. Education is always an important issue in all society. A good education not only open your future but also contribute to your country. Also in Vietnam – a developing country, you can easily get a convenient education environment at big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. However, in countryside, it’s difficult for children to be provided enough living and educational condition in a hard life. First reason, Inhabitants work all day in farms and they think housework must be helped and done by their children, so the children are not taken care of by their parents at early age. Even some adults couldn’t be allowed to school because of earning money to support their family. Because they think that education couldn’t be useful when their son can earn money now. Second reason, lack of teacher and less of classroom are still existed. Especially, in mountainous area, far from cities with hard traffic is more difficult to get to school. So that is why the children are more and more absent class. As a result, the children couldn’t get that they must be deservedly received.
Now the farmers change their mind, although their works are still hard but their children are going to be raised more careful and spent more time for studies. Classrooms are going to be expended and built new. Problem about teachers is also going to be cared from the government. The teachers will be trained more to provide enough for countryside areas. In addition, the children’s future will be better with full knowledge.

  13. Leon,
So in China you DON'T want college graduates and you think the government should control who gets an education and who doesn't? This way of thinking is very difficult for me, as an American, to understand.
