  1. The frist day i came to U.S i didn't feel good.because i had to come here by air alone, and transfer the airplane frome New York to Houston.Even if it was not my frist time go by air alone. That time i had to pick my baggage by myself and find the gate in English. My speaking was very poor at that time.I didnt even know how to explan what i wanted.
i missed the airplane that one i should take.i had to find the way to take the next one that would go to the Houston.i tried to talk to the workers there and told them what problem i had.Fortunatly, the workers were so friendly. They help me so much.i was so glad to meet them.
Finally,i arrived the Houston at night. The winter here likes the spring in my city.So i felt very comfortable when i just came here.

  2. Today september first of 2009, I took a flight from Guarulhos BRA to Dallas USA.
Well, the beginning was exciting because I was seating close to the window and when the plane took of and when I started looking at the city, everything was small, I could see all the city lights.
But after a couple of hours everything became boring, you know.. I have nothing to do, I was dark at night and I could see anything else through the window and I there, trying to sleep and listening that noise of the aircraft machine. Believe or not. I spend almost 10 hours inside that piece of can.
So I decided to ask for the young man seating beside me to chance places because I wished to stay near the aisle.
I stood up several times, walked through the aisle, I went to talk to the flight attendees.
So the time passed and a new day came up.
I was in Dallas airport, a huge airport.
I passed through the immigration and then after a couple of minutes I was in another flight from Dallas to Houston.
It was a nice and short trip and I arrived here in about an hour.
So I picked all my belongs up in the luggage claim and when I was lefting the airport gate line I was my roommate waiting for me.

    About my first impressions.
I found the weather here too hot and humid, this city is too big, everything is far from and sometimes I have the sensation to be in a empty city.
I don’t see people walking on the street (sidewalk) I don’t see much life, only cars, machines, building, huge roads, that you like to call highways.
I was not used to see these big fat people as I see here. A lot of people not take care of health here, I think they don’t care about good looking shape or outfit… I don’t know. It’s strange for me.
I was choked when I first enter in a supermarket ( a grocery store as I heard here) and then I realized why , not always but sometimes, US citizen are such a wasteful society. All the things in the grocery is too big, all big size, a great amount of quantity. And also, walking on the street I see a lot of machines ( microwaves, TVs) throwing out on trash.

And also, in the first and second day I was lost in this city. I had no idea where I was, I have no idea of direction, references and so on.
Well I think these was my first impression of Houston.

  4. The first day i came to the Houston, i felt so tired because the jet lag. so i slept all the day. In the second day, i went to the Texas Department of Public Safety to take my license test, i waited for 4 hours, it was a really long time to take the test. After the test, i went to my aunt's house for my lunch, it was happy to see her and we also had a great time, we chat and shared our life experiences. And i did some shopping in the mall, i bought many clothes, such as american eagle and A&F.
About the first impression, i felt Houston was a big city and also very convenience, the weather was extremely hot and dry.
Right now, i lived with my brother, i felt confortable and relax, i hope that i can have a good time in the LCC.

  5. I arrived to Houston on May 13, 2008 because I wanted to stady English in LCC program of UH.I will never forget my first days in Houston because I was feeling extremely exited and very sorprise the all things that I had never seen. While I was going to friend's house in a taxi, I was seeing many things. For instance, The beautiful Downtown, highways, long horse trailers, beautiful houses, new cars and big stores. On the other hand, I was thinking about my family because before I came to Houston they told me that Houston was very different from Venezuela. Moreover, when I got home I called my family to Venezuela. They were happy because I was fine. After, I was speaking with my friend Virginia for long time. She had invited his friends to know me. I was very embarrassed when his friends greeted me in English, so I had never studied English in Venezuela. However, Virginia invited 2 friends from Venezuela and I can communicated with them. This day, I was tired but after took dinner with Virginia and his friends I went to my new room.In addition, I opened my suitcase to arrange my clothes. Also, I was whaching TV for 10 minuts but I didn't underestand what they said so, I was feeling sad because I didn't know about English. The next day, Virginia and me went to UH together to enroll. This second day was very hard for me because I had to take a test. When the teacher talked to the instructions test I only thought in my God because I didn't underestand this meeting. I answered some questions but I didn't finish this test. In this moment, I was feeling very bad so, I had never had an experience such manner. In short, I always be remembering my firs days in Houston where I lived unforgettable moments whith American People.

  6. It seems that time is running out for me, I remember these days from last year, where it was my first time in Houston, I remember it as just fine days . because I m accustomed to travel on my own

I arrived at the airport after a flight lasted 16 hours, I went to the hotel then the university next day to register and to take a tour in the university.

I was interested in the beautiful nature, I did not expect to see large area of trees as well as heavily of the multiple nationalities , beside that , changing of climates and livening in wooden houses.

It is clear that the basic comparison is in daily life, in our country we can do shopping , dining and still meeting friends until 12 AM. But here things are different, unfortunately , is too dangerous to walk at night .
At the present time I can say I got used to Houston and this just one step from learning.

  7. My frist day in Houston was interesting. After I got Houston,I met my uncle-in-law first. We picked my luggage up, and want back to the house that they live. When we got home, there was a littel girl ran to the door and opened it after my uncle-in-law knocked the door. She is one of my cousion that I met first. She was enthusiastic and huged me. Then.my grandparents showed up. After a couple hour, my aunt came back with my another cousinwhich is a boy. They all gave me a warm welcome. We decided to buy some food after we had our dinner. There is no difference between Chinese super market and American's. When we got out of the super market, I said I need go to the Starbuck's and get some coffee. My aunt told me that was too late and all the stores were closed except super markets. But I saw all the store's lights were still open. She told me that is different from China. In China, when the store is closed, their lights were just turned off, but it is opposit in America. I thought Houston is interesting from that. But now, my mind changed. I felt Houston is the most boring city in America. Because I have some friends who live in other cities in America, and they all not as boring as Houston. That is why I felt Houston is the most boring city, but i have to say that Houston is a good place for study.

  8. I came here one month ago with the flight took my 12 hours. It was a little bit tired after the flight and it was very late at night. No one came to pick me up, so I need to take a taxi to came to UH's campus. The first moment I feel amazed about every thing.

It was dark night but I also saw the downtown and the road, and I thought Houston is so huge, it may be bigger than my home city 4 times. The whether was very hot, incontract inside each building it's so cold because the air condition is working all the time.

The taxi driver pick me up to the Hilton hotel of the university. I stayed there at night, then next day I moved to the Moody Tower. So everything was exciting for me, I met a lot of new friend and they are all from the different countries. People are friendly and cuties and I also love the whether. And Houston is the exciting place to study as for me!

  9. I arrived in Houston on Aug23 when was the most busy day in this year.

I got off a plane and immediately I moved very quickly to take immigration. I was confused because so many differnt people were waiting immigration, they talked in their language noisily, and even I had many baggage in my hand.

After I finished immigration process, I met my new roommate who waited for me. We never met before, but we soon became intimate with each other easily, so I felt happy. I could came at my new apartment. Actually, Houston airport was not near my house. However, my roomate was willing to picked me up. If I found apartment by myself, I spent lots of time, so I have been felt thankfulness.

Rirght now, I'm adapting in this city, and LCC.

  10. When I arrived at Houston on Sep.3 , I rode a Call Korean Texi to go my room. So I asked about Houston. He said me that Houston is nice place to live.
That time, when I checked in the room, it was very difficult for me. Because I couldn't speak English well. Anyway I went to the room, I felt it was not same with picture. But I felt it was beautiful place.
After I checked in my room, I didn't have anything to do. I didn't have a friend. and I didn't know about University of Houston, and I even didn't have Cougar net account to browse the Internet. So I just had slept until the beginning of our school. But it could make me to have a time I thought about my future.

But now I feel nice and enjoy the school. !

  11. With a purpose of having a good knowledge and more experience. I decided to come to the U.S. - one of the countries have a good education. But I was also a little bit worry about my ability, my English skill... Can I get used to a developed country soon? Can I study efficient? Can I do successfully my dream?

The answer goes on to open when I arrived in Houston where I study and do my plan. It was different with my imagination that Houston is a busy and crowded city with a lot of people walk on stress. Houston is bigger than my home city but unlike what I often see on TV about the U.S, and unlike in VN, here everybody also uses car as the common means of transport and that time I knew that I need to study to driver sometime, it's better for my life here.
My friend picked me up in the airport, she helped me take my luggage because my hand was still hurt after the accident in VN. On the way my friend's house, we dropped by a Vietnamese restaurant to have dinner. I hadn't thought that I would eat Vietnamese food in the U.S. I didn't eat much although I can't eat food on the plane, but I was happy because eating Vietnamese food. And then, we went to her house. That is the first time I have been in American style house. That is so beautiful and convenient. A little bit thought about my parents and Vietnamese people, I felt sad. When do we have a convenient life like here? When do we have a good education to welcome all students from different countries?
That night I can't sleep well. Didn't cry, but it was not easy for the first far from my house. I thought about what will I do here and made my list plan.
A new day came, My friend helped me go to the market to buy necessary things. After that, we visited the UH that I thought about a lot. and that was what I can't imagine, It was so large, the largest school I have come, I noticed the library and I really like it, have a lot of books, and I hoped I can read them soon. the studying environment here urged me to study when I saw students concentrating on your studies.
It was not surprised when I had some problem with my English skill. Everyone I met in the market, they didn't understand me because I pronounced wrong, I had to show hand gestures and body posture to express my opinion. and I also must try to listen to them to know what they were saying. I worried how to express politely. But I realized that the smile can help me do easier and everyone who I met can understand me a little bit.

I think that all international students also have problem in new life such as language, culture, religion and...food. But all try their best to have comfortable life to study proficient, and every day in here is a happy day with new discovery. and your smile will help us close to someone else although you come from different countries.

  12. I came here on 3rd Sep. My new friends were waiting for picking me up. Actually, I applied LCC pick up services, but there were not the man who were supposed to pick me up. Fortunately, some friends were there, so I could come to UH. First day in Houston, I looked around UH with my new friends Thoroughly. I thought UH campus are very wide and awesome. Maybe,My country is smaller than texas. So, there aren't any big school in Korea. Next day, I went to the HEB by my friend's car. There are many goods that I've never seen, so I bought many things for forward living. After shopping, I went to the church, and met some Koreans. We had some delicious Korean food, then welcome to each other. Honestly, I had felt sad until meet them, but I felt better feeling after the meeting in church.
I thought Houston can be somewhat boring and
dangerous to someome like me before I came here. However, I'm sure Houston must be my favorite place I have ever been.

  14. My flight to Houston was actually in Aug 22, immediately after i celebrated my 21 Birthday in my country, Israel.
The flight was about 15 hours, the first flight was from Tel aviv to New York then we (me , my mom and actually also my little dog:) took a second flight from N.Y to Houston. Finally we arrived:)
My first day here was very exciting. my mom's friend took us from the airport . everything in that point was seemed to me very different:
the behvior of all the people around me was really nice, friendly and i could feel the generosity "by the air". "yes mrs, please sir" exc'..
people have just asked each other for their feelings, even though they did not meet before.
In addition, i have also been amazed by the beautiful, natural view of Houston that including wonderful forests, runches and more. everything was seemed soo green!:P i felt calm and tranquility by this view.
when i first got to my mom's friend house (that i am actually a guest there right now), i have met her son ,a good friend mine, then he quickly took me to meet some of his friends in the area.
this is the jewish community state.
we saw a comedy movie at his friend house , were laughing together and then Finally had agreat dinnr by a sushi resturant called "Azuma".
I am really glad to be here. and also to meet friends from all over the world.

    yours karen.

  15. while my flight,i was very sick.i think that i had malaria,a disease from AFRICA.so,i had so much fever and it' was too cold in the airplane. The differents meals weren't good for me,so i didn't eat much food. The only thing which was funny for me there were the movies and series that i have never seen.
When i arrivet at houston,i was always sick and i passed so long time at the airport because there were many peole at the immigration. After that my friends came to seek me and we left the airport. On the road,i saw many beautiful cars but really i didn't feel well.when we arrived at our apartmant i started to take some drops to be healthy.Unfortunately my disease continued during a week,so i stayed at home while my first week at Houston. Then,i started to enjoy myself with my friends and we went out to pubs and night clubs like African's nignt club.that was so exciting! next i began school activities and i liked so much the university of houston, lcc and these students.
I'm very happy to be here and i wish many students were be sastificted in this campus.

  16. Three months ago, I arrived at Houston. It was the first time I went abroad by myself. Everything was strange but exciting. Actually, I was worrying about my communication with native speaker very much, Because of my poor English at that time. But luckily for me, my girlfriend was here, and she could pick me up from the airport.
When I came here it was night, I saw the city is really huge, and the light made the city looked very attractive. However, during the next, the weather changed my mind. It was really hot during summer. At first, I prepared to have a tour on the campus, but I really didn’t want go anywhere under the hot sunshine. Therefore, I just went out eat Chinese buffet with my new friends.
Even though the weather here wasn’t make me comfortable at that time, but move to another country still made me exciting, different culture, different people, and even different food. It was really a precious experience in my lifetime.

  17. Trang,
What accident did you have in Vietnam?

    Ricardo,
The reason why Americans don't repair their old things is that the cost of labor here is more than the cost of replacing the item.

For example, to fix my computer can cost hundreds of dollars; to buy a new one might only cost a little bit more than that, so why invest in an old item when it doesn't cost much more to buy a new one?

Personally, I detest this situation. I hate throwing out old things--I agree that it seems wasteful--but it is also wasteful to throw away money on repairs.

Also, I'm sorry that Americans are not as good-looking and fit (healthy) as Brazilians!

    Joon and Lee,
I feel so bad that nobody picked you up at the airport! I hope you are making friends and beginning to adjust to life here.

    Joel,
Did you actually have malaria? I'm glad you are feeling better now.

    Dalal,
So how do you like driving?

    To All,
You are doing a great job with your writing. Keep up the wonderful work!

  18. Well, everybody has started their stories from the flight experience. I am sure this is the separate wide topic to discuss about. I was staying in the airplane 15 hours and just had a sit in the first row of the economic class. I was lucky, because I had opportunity to spread out my legs. Nevertheless it was hard to see the empty seats in business class where the people were sleeping well and comfortable, to realize that you are so close to these seats and can do nothing. However my neighbor was sociable that is why it was not so boring. In airport everybody was talking with me in Spanish. I was thinking about two things: if I am in Spain or USA, and the second: one if I look like to Mexicans or Spanish people :))

My first day in Houston I felt myself tired, a little bit confused, because I had come from the Saturday to Saturday. I wanted to sleep in the afternoon. I was waking up in the midnight. It was too hot outside and too cold inside, the crazy rain. This sort of rain I have just seen in Indian movies. ))) I expected for the high buildings, a lot of people across the streets. But it was not happen. I found on the big distances, a lot of cars, and one –two floors houses. I have been still surprising for the sizes in America: the sizes of the roads, cars, grocery stores, the sizes of fruits, greens, the sizes of ketchup boxes, or shampoo boxes. Something like store for army in their quantities and sizes.

However there are so many positive aspects in Houston. So many nationalities and everybody have a good deal with each other. I am just amazing for the variety and the intensity of beautiful palette and combination of cultures, traditions, and modernity. People are so friendly that can easily say “how do you do” to the stranger. They are glad to help you and answer for all your questions. I like people here. I like my University, my class, my teachers. I am getting very good experience here, right now))). Now I am living one of my unforgettable Americans days in my life)))

  20. When I arrived at houston in the first day ,it was nearly 10:00PM.There was a small accident before the airplane landed in IAH.There was a heavily rain that day ,even I can clearly see the lighting in the sky through the window on the airplane. The airplane circled in the houston ‘s sky ,it can not land because of the bad whether.I was nervous and I thought many terrible things ,the film of Final Destination and other plane crash, but at last I told myself “do not worry about it ,everything will go well”, the airplane temporarily landed in Austin airport later .All the passengers stayed there for half an hour ,then the airplane took off again and safely landed in IAH .It was a adventure and made me unforgetful.
Now I have many friends here and I enjoy the study and life here.

  21. My first day in Houston was terrible. I arrived with my wife to George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport at 11:00 AM through United airlines. After that, I took a taxi cab to UH directly because my apartment in the new UH residents hall Calhoun Lofts. When I arrived to the lofts I finished my papers. Then, took the key and go to our new apartment. It was very nice but, needs lots of things (foods, pillows, TV, dishes...etc). Again, we took a taxi cab go to TARGET market in the main street. We bought everything we need and comeback to our new home for eat and sleep...

  22. I was in a motorbike accident 2 weeks before I came to the U.S. In addition, my left hand was broken, now there are 2 metals attach to 2 bones into my hand. For 8-12 months, I need to take them out. So I consider that should I take it out in VietNam or the U.S.?
