In 4F today, we were talking about the origins of the word "hookah." Here is what I found:
Not Arabic, but not from Latin either! The word comes from Hindi or Urdu.
A hookah (Hindi: हुक़्क़ा, Urdu: حقّہ hukkah), nargile in Turkish or shisha (Arabic: شيشة) is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) water pipe for smoking. The concept of filtered smoke through a pipe originated in India and later developed into the modern hookah in Iran,[1][2][3][4][5] hookah has gained immense popularity, especially in the Middle East and is gaining popularity in the USA, UK, Canada, and elsewhere.[6] Today, some of the highest quality and most extravagant hookah pipes come from Egypt, Lebanon, Iran and Turkey. The hookah operates by water filtration and indirect heat. It is used for smoking herbal fruits and tobacco, and is often considered to be healthier than smoking cigarettes.
