Weekend Plans

What are you going to do this weekend?
What will you have already finished by Sunday night?

Homework for the weekend (due Tuesday)

chapter 4, ex.11

chapter 5, ex. 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13
also, study the chart 5-2 (adverb clauses to show time relationships)

On Monday, you will do work in the listening book with Jackie, my substitute. Therefore, you do not need to bring your grammar book to class on Monday.

Have a good weekend, and I will see you on Tuesday,
HC

BTW (by the way), by the time we see each other again, you WILL HAVE COMPLETED all of this homework!

Question for You (future progressive)

What will you be doing at 3 p.m. on Sunday?

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Homework, September 24 (due Sept. 28)

Write a paragraph in which you discuss your future plans. Where will you be in life next year? In five years? In ten years? Will you get married or will you remain single? Will you have children? If yes, when? How many children do you think you will you have? What kind of work will you do? What else will you do in your life? Discuss both your personal and professional aspirations.

"Every Breath You Take," by the Police (future progressive)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiAMPFmd7ps&feature=related
In this version, the song is sung by Sting and Bruce Springsteen. For me this is a double treat, because Springsteen is one of my favorites!

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Oh, can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please,
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take
I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Will vs. Be Going To: A Quiz

http://esl.about.com/library/beginner/bl_bgfuture.htm?lastQuestion=1&answers=1&submit=Next+Question+%3E%3E&ccount=1

The Hamsa (to answer Ricardo's question):

A hamsa is a charm, symbol or talisman used by both people of Islamic and Jewish faiths. It is thought to ward off the evil eye and offer protection from the hand of God. The hamsa, also called the hamesh hand, looks like a hand with three fingers pointing upward and the thumb and pinky pointing outward. The palm of the hand is commonly covered with an eye.

"I'll Be There," by Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five (also future promise)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oT_TyK1Eh8

You and I must make a pact, we must bring salvation back
Where there is love, I'll be there

I'll reach out my hand to you, I'll have faith in all you do
Just call my name and I'll be there

I'll be there to comfort you,
Build my world of dreams around you, I'm so glad that I found you
I'll be there with a love that's strong
I'll be your strength, I'll keep holding on

Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter
Togetherness, well that's all I'm after
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be there to protect you, with an unselfish love that respects you
Just call my name and I'll be there

If you should ever find someone new, I know he'd better be good to you
cause if he doesn't, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah
I'll be there, I'll be there, just call my name, I'll be there

(just look over your shoulders, honey - oo)

I'll be there, I'll be there, whenever you need me, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah

I'll be there, I'll be there, just call my name, I'll be there...

"I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston (future promise)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a35UwZlFvs

If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you. Hmm.

Bittersweet memories
That is all I'm taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of.
And I wish to you, joy and happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I, I will always love you.

You, darling, I love you.
Ooh, I'll always, I'll always love you.

Friday Fun Day

This Friday we will have our first Friday Fun Day. We will have regular class for 2 hours (1 hour with me/1 hour with Greg), and then we will spend 2 hours together in my room. We will play some games and get to know each other.

You are welcome to bring food for the class. If you'd like to make or bring something special from your country, that would be nice. I will bring the paper goods (plates/cups/forks).

Do you have a birthday during the session? If so, when?

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," by U2 (present perfect)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb1XXs7e7ac

The meaning of this song is unclear to me--it could be about love; it could be about religion. Either way, it uses the present perfect perfectly!!!

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like a fire
(I was) burning inside her

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds
And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Oh my shame
You know I believe it

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

"Waiting for a Girl like You," by Foreigner (present perfect progressive)

To hear the music, go to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXjJCbA5qc4&feature=related

So long, I've been looking too hard, I've been waiting too long
Sometimes I don't know what I will find, I only know its a matter of time
When you love someone, when you love someone

It feels so right, so warm and true, I need to know if you feel it too

Maybe I'm wrong, won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong?
This heart of mine has been hurt before, this time I want to be sure

I've been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life
I've been waiting for a girl like you, your loving will survive
I've been waiting for someone new to make me feel alive
Yeah, waiting for a girl like you to come into my life

You're so good, when we make love it's understood
Its more than a touch or a word can say
Only in dreams could it be this way
When you love someone, yeah, really love someone

Now I know its right, from the moment I wake up till deep in the night
There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be than holding you tenderly

I've been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life
I've been waiting for a girl like you, your loving will survive
I've been waiting for someone new to make me feel alive
Yeah, waiting for a girl like you to come into my life

I've been waiting, waiting for you, ooh, I've been waiting
I've been waiting
(I've been waiting for a girl like you, Ive been waiting)
Won't you come into my life?

A Video for You to Watch

http://guitargal.multiply.com/video/item/27

"I Love Lucy" was a very famous t.v. show in the 1950's. Yes, people were alive back then, but not in color :). The female star of the show, Lucille Ball, is still the Queen of Comedy, in my opinion. I think that all of you will laugh and identify with this "matter of translation."

Tell us about yourself...

Please tell the class about yourself. Where are you in life? Did you finish high school? College? Graduate school? Talk about your background, and your professional and personal aspirations. Also, discuss your interests, hobbies, and talents.

Post your writing under "comments" to this post. I look forward to learning more about you through your writing.

The word "hookah" (4F)

In 4F today, we were talking about the origins of the word "hookah." Here is what I found:
Not Arabic, but not from Latin either! The word comes from Hindi or Urdu.

A hookah (Hindi: हुक़्क़ा, Urdu: حقّہ hukkah), nargile in Turkish or shisha (Arabic: شيشة‎) is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) water pipe for smoking. The concept of filtered smoke through a pipe originated in India and later developed into the modern hookah in Iran,[1][2][3][4][5] hookah has gained immense popularity, especially in the Middle East and is gaining popularity in the USA, UK, Canada, and elsewhere.[6] Today, some of the highest quality and most extravagant hookah pipes come from Egypt, Lebanon, Iran and Turkey. The hookah operates by water filtration and indirect heat. It is used for smoking herbal fruits and tobacco, and is often considered to be healthier than smoking cigarettes.

Welcome to your blog!

Hello students in 4E and 4F

The purpose of this blog is threefold. First, it will be a place for you to do some of your homework assignments. The second purpose for this blog is for us to share useful information (where to go, where to shop, what to do if you have a problem, etc.). You can also use the blog to post items of interest, such as articles, pictures, invitations, etc. Finally, I will use the blog to post different internet links for different activities such as on-line grammar practice/quizzes and listening activities. I will also post weekly schedules, in case you lose what I hand out in class.

You should check this blog every few days.

I look forward to a great semester with all of you, and I look forward to "seeing*" you on-line,
HC

*seeing here is progressive, because it means "meeting"
